CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC

CHURCH

Part One—The Profession of Faith

“Jesus Ascended into Heaven

and Is Seated at the Right Hand of

God the Father Almighty”

132. What does the Ascension mean?

After  forty  days  during  which  Jesus

showed  himself  to  the  apostles  with

ordinary  human  features  which  veiled

his  glory  as  the  Risen  One,  Christ

ascended into heaven and was seated

at  the  right  hand  of  the  Father.  He  is

the  Lord  who  now  in  his  humanity

reigns  in  the  everlasting  glory  of  the

Son  of God  and  constantly  intercedes

for  us  before  the  Father.  He  sends  us

his Spirit  and  he  gives  us  the  hope  of

one  day  reaching  the  place  he  has

prepared for us.

“From  thence  He  shal   come

to  judge  the  living  and  the

dead”

133. How does the Lord Jesus now

reign?

As  the  Lord  of  the  cosmos  and  of

history,  the  Head  of  his  Church,  the

glorified  Christ  mysteriously  remains

on earth where his kingdom is already

present in seed and in its beginning in

the Church. One  day  he  wil   return  in

glory  but  we  do  not  know  the  time.

Because  of  this  we  live  in  watchful

anticipation, praying:

“Come, Lord” (Revelation 22:20).

134. How will the coming of the Lord

in glory happen?

After the final cosmic upheaval of this

passing  world  the  glorious  coming  of

Christ  wil   take  place. Then  wil   come

the  definitive  triumph  of  God  in  the

parousia and the Last Judgment. Thus

the Kingdom of God wil  be realized.

135.  How  will Christ  judge  the  living

and the dead?

Christ wil  judge with the power he has

gained  as  the  Redeemer  of  the  world

who came to bring salvation to al . The

secrets  of  hearts  wil   be  brought  to

light  as  well  as  the  conduct  of  each

one  toward  God  and  toward  his

neighboUr.  Everyone,  according  to

how  he  has  lived,  wil   either  be  fil ed

with life or damned for eternity. In this

way, “the ful ness of Christ” (Ephesians

4:13)  wil   come  about  in  which  “God

wil  be al  in al ” (1 Corinthians 15:28).

TOTUS TUUS

TOTUS TUUS

Dear Parents

We have four (4) young Missionaries coming

to our parish from the Archdiocese of Toronto

this summer for one week: Sunday, July 8—

Saturday, July 14.

They  wil   run  a  day  program  and  evening

                                                                               !6

This  Sunday’s  Readings:  Acts  4:32–35;  Ps  118:2–4,
13–15, 22–24; 1 Jn 5:1–6; Jn 20:19–31

Three  times  in  today’s  Psalm  we  cry  out  a  victory
shout: “His steadfast love endures forever.”

Truly we’ve known the everlasting love of God, who
has  come  to  us  as  our  Saviour.  By  the  blood  and
water that flowed from Jesus’ pierced side (see John
19:34), we’ve been made God’s children, as we hear
in today’s Epistle.

Yet  we  never  met  Jesus,  never  heard  Him  teach,
never saw Him raised from the dead. His saving Word
came  to  us  in  the  Church—through  the  ministry  of
the  apostles,  who  in  today’s  Gospel  are  sent  as  He
was sent.

He  was  made  a  life-giving  Spirit  (see  1  Corinthians
15:45) and He fil ed His apostles with that Spirit. As
we hear in today’s First Reading, they bore witness to
His resurrection with great power. And through their
witness,  handed  down  in  the  Church  through  the
centuries, their teaching and traditions have reached
us (see Acts 2:42).

We  encounter  Him  as  the  apostles  did—in  the
breaking  of  the  bread  on  the  Lord’s  day  (see  Acts
20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Revelation 1:10).

There  is  something  liturgical  about  the  way  today’s
Gospel scenes unfold. It’s as if John is trying to show
us how the risen Lord comes to us in the liturgy and
sacraments.  In  both  scenes  it  is  Sunday  night. The
doors are bolted tight, yet Jesus mysteriously comes.
He  greets  them  with  an  expression,  “Peace  be  with
you,”  used  elsewhere  by  divine  messengers  (see
Daniel  10:19; Judges  6:23).  He  shows  them  signs  of
His  real  bodily  presence.  And  on  both  nights  the
disciples respond by joyful y receiving Jesus as their
“Lord.”  Isn’t  this  what  happens  in  the  Mass—where
our Lord speaks to us in His Word, and gives himself
to us in the sacrament of His body and blood?

Let  us  approach  the  altar  with  joy,  knowing  that
every Eucharist is the day the Lord has made—when
the victory of Easter is again made wonderful in our
eyes.

“My Lord And My God!”

CATHOLIC ANSWERS

DID THE POPE REALLY SAY HELL DOESN’T EXIST?

Question
Did Pope Francis say there was no hel ?
Answer
The Vatican  has  reported  that  Italian  journalist  Eugenio
Scalfari’s  assertion  regarding  Pope  Francis’s  position  on
hel   is  not  accurate.  Scalfari  claimed  the  pope  told  him
that  damned  human  persons  don’t  suffer  in  hell
eternal y but rather simply go out of existence.
On  various  occasions,  Pope  Francis  has  publicly  made
clear that hel  is real and everlasting and that unrepentant
souls  who  definitively  exclude  themselves  from  God  go
there. As Vatican News recently reported:

It  was  at  a  morning  Mass  in  Santa  Marta,  back  in
November  2016,  that  Pope  Francis  mentioned  how  the
world “does not like to think” about the Four Last Things.
The reason, he suggested, is that death, judgement, hel
and heaven, are just too scary to contemplate. The truth,
he continued, is that if you choose to live your whole life
far away from the Lord, you run the risk of “continuing to
live far away from him for al  eternity.”
Pope  Francis  has  made  his  personal  vision  of  hel   quite
clear  on  several  occasions.  During  another  homily  in  the
Vatican  in  2016,  he  said  hell  is  not  “a  torture
chamber.”  Rather,  it  is  the  horror  of  being  separated
forever  from  the  “God  who  loves  us  so  much.”  His
predecessor, Pope St John Paul II, said something similar
in 1999: not so much a physical place, he explained, “Hel
indicates  the  state  of  those  who  freely  and  definitively
separate  themselves  from God,  the  source  of  al   life  and
joy.”

CAN I MARRY WITHOUT A WEDDING?

Question
I want to get married but don't want a wedding. What are
my options?
Answer
I am not entirely sure what you mean by "wedding." I wil
assume  you  mean  that  you  do  not  want  a  Mass.  In  that
case, there are a few options:
•A Liturgy of the Word with the exchange of vows. This is
the usual choice when one spouse is not Catholic.
•Exchanging vows at any regular parish Mass. I have seen
couples exchange vows at a regular Sunday or daily Mass.
•A  simple  exchange  of  vows  and  reception  of  the
marriage  blessing  with  nothing  else. This  is  rare  but  not
unheard of.

If  the  marriage  is  between  two Catholics,  the  normative
expectation  is  that  the  exchange  of  vows  will  take  place
within Mass (Order of Celebrating Matrimony, 29). In this
situation,  you  would  need  to  explain  to  the  priest  your
reasons for not wanting to exchange vows during a Mass.

LENT IS HERE!!!

When Is Ash Wednesday?—February 14

What is Ash Wednesday?

This day marks the beginning of Lent. We

attend Mass on this day and receive the

Ashes on the forehead as a sign of sorrow

for sin and as sign of our intention to

become more faithful.

What is Lent?

The penitential season of the Church’s

year. It is 40 days of preparation to renew

our Baptismal vows on Easter Sunday.

During this time we seek closer union with

the Lord through an increase of fasting,

prayer, and giving of alms (charitable

giving).

Lenten Fast & Abstinence

Catholics are obligated to Fast & Abstain

from meat on Ash Wednesday & Good

Friday.

The Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good

Friday.

The fast on Ash Wed and Good Friday

involves eating only one ful  meal. One or
two smal er meals may be taken on those
days, but may not total one full meal.  No

eating between meals.

Abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good

Friday

Abstinence on these days from meat can

include eggs or dairy products.

Age Requirements

"Al  Catholics at 15 are bound by the law of
abstinence; al  adults are bound by the law

of fast up to the beginning of their 60

year.

Fridays of the Year

It is a requirement of our Faith that we

abstain from meat on al  the Fridays of the
year (except Feasts) in commemoration of

our Saviour’s death.
