Working wonders for our new arrivals in

Canada…

Within one year of arriving in Canada, large

numbers of immigrants who had no prior mental

health problems experience mental health

challenges that often impede their ability to settle

in Canada. in addition, there are few culturally and

linguistically appropriate mental health services.

Last year, ShareLife agencies helped to meet this

challenge by providing advocacy programs for

more than 40,000 immigrants and refugees in the

Gta.

Thank you for your generosity.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

Optional Memorial:

 Saint John 1, Pope, Martyr

— Monday, May 18: Pope John I inherited the
Arian  heresy,  which  denied  the  divinity  of
Christ.  Italy  had  been  ruled  for  30  years  by
an emperor who espoused the heresy, though
he  treated  the  empire’s  Catholics  with
toleration.  His  policy  changed  at  about  the
time the young John was elected pope.

When  the  eastern  emperor  began  imposing
severe measures on the Arians of his area, the
w e s t e r n

emperor  forced

John to head

a  delegation  to

the  East  to

s o f t e n  t h e

m e a s u r e s

a g a i n s t  t h e

h e r e t i c s .

Little  is  known

of the manner

or  outcome  of

the  negotiations—designed  to  secure
continued toleration of Catholics in the West.

When John returned to Rome, he found that
the  emperor  had  begun  to  suspect  his
friendship with his eastern rival.

On  his  way  home,  John  was  imprisoned
when  he  reached  Ravenna  because  the
emperor  suspected  a  conspiracy  against  his
throne. Shortly after his imprisonment, John
died,  apparently  from  the  treatment  he  had
received.

Comment:

We  cannot  choose  the  issues  for

which  we  have  to  suffer  and  perhaps  die.
John  I  suffered  because  of  a  power-
conscious emperor. Jesus suffered because of
the suspicions of those who were threatened
by his freedom, openness and powerlessness.
“If you find that the world hates you, know it
has hated me before you” (John 15:18).

Quote:

 “Martyrdom makes disciples like their

Master, who willingly accepted death for the
salvation  of  the  world,  and  through  it  they
are made like him by the shedding of blood.
Therefore,  the  Church  considers  it  the
highest  gift  and  supreme  test  of  love.  And
while it is given to few, all however must be

prepared  to  confess  Christ  before  humanity
and to follow him along the way of the cross
amid  the  persecutions  which  the  Church
never  lacks”  (Vatican  II,  Dogmatic
Constitution  on  the  Church,  42,  Austin
Flannery translation).

SMILE

The Prayer Request

A businessman needed a million dollars to

close an important business transaction. He

went to church to pray for the money.

He knelt and started praying next to a man

who was praying out loud for a hundred

dollars he needed to pay an urgent debt.

The businessman took out his wallet and

pressed the hundred dollars into the other

man's hand.

Overjoyed, the man got up and left the

church.

The businessman then closed his eyes and

prayed, "And now, Lord, that I have your

undivided attention...."

GOSPEL

Commentary  1

  –  Look  forward  to  what  the

Father promises

“From  the  moment  of  his  resurrection
triumph,  the  Saviour  was  living  in  the
bosom  of  the  Father.  The  faith  of  the
Church had its beginnings in meetings with
the  Risen  Lord  –  in  which  he  ‘showed
himself  alive’  and  ‘told  them  about  the
kingdom  of  God’  -  preparing  them  for  the
great mission that would be theirs.

“Jesus  is  not  abandoning  his  friends.  On
the contrary, he tells them to look forward
to  ‘what  the  Father  has  promised’.  When
they  are  ‘baptised  with  the  Holy  Spirit’  –
the Spirit who is the very expression of the
life  he  shares  with  the  Father  –  he  will  be
with  them  in  all  that  they  are  called  to  be
and  do.  The  Lord's  new  presence  will  fill
with new life the Church which is about to
be  launched  forth  on  its  mission  -  to  bring
the  power  and  blessings  of  the  Lord's
Paschal  Mystery  ‘to  the  ends  of  the
earth’ (Luke), ‘to all creation’ (Mark).

“According  to  the  Gospel  of  Luke  the
angels tell the disciples not to seek the Lord
‘in the sky’, but to take up the mission they
have  received,  to  be  his  ‘witnesses’
throughout  their  world.  The  era  of  the
pilgrim Church that is about to begin – the
angels  tell  them  -  will  end  when  Jesus
returns,  and  the  Church's  life  in  faith  and
sacraments  gives  way  to  the  absolute
fulfilment of the final Kingdom.”

-

From a homily by Fr John Thornhill, sm

Evangelii Gaudium
“Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes
to care with particular love and concern are unborn
children,  the  most  defenceless  and  innocent  among
us.  Nowadays  efforts  are  made  to  deny  them  their
human  dignity  and  to  do  with  them  whatever  one
pleases,  taking  their  lives  and  passing  laws
preventing anyone from standing in the way of this.
Frequently,  as  a  way  of  ridiculing  the  Church’s
effort  to  defend  their  lives,  attempts  are  made  to
present her position as ideological, obscurantist and
conservative.  Yet  this  defence  of  unborn  life  is
closely linked to the defence of each and every other
human right. It involves the conviction that a human
being  is  always  sacred  and  inviolable,  in  any
situation and at every stage of development.”

- Par 213 from Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis, Nov. 24, 2013

The Good News Everywhere….”

“BECAUSE GOD IS REAL”

by Peter Kreeft

Why Is There Evil?

8. How does evil fit into the “good news”?
To  see  this,  let’s  first  review  why  we  call  it  “good
news”.

Christianity  is  news.  It  is  a  story,  a  true  story,  a
history,  a  narrative.  The  Bible  is  a  book  of  events,
from the Creation to the Last Judgment. And in the
middle of the story is the most important event that
ever happened, the “Jesus-event”, the Incarnation of
God  into  time  and  history,  the  birth  and  life  and
death and Resurrection of the Saviour. That is God’s
answer  to  evil.  It  is  like  a  D-day  invasion  of  the
world after the Devil had corrupted it. It is a drama.
It is the most dramatic story in the world. It is not
just  a  set  of  abstract,  eternal  principles  of  theology
and morality. That is only its road map.

9. Why is Jesus in this story?
Jesus is not only the teacher who has the answer to
the problem of evil; He is the answer. He is the live-
action  hero  of  the  drama.  He  doesn’t  just  solve  the
puzzle  of  why  there  is  evil—He  destroys  evil,  He
conquers  Satan,  He  frees  His  children  (us)  from
Satan’s captivity. That’s why He went to the Cross.
10. If Jesus is the hero who solves the problem of evil, then

what must we do to solve the problem of evil?
First  we  must  believe  in  Him,  trust  in  Him,  love
Him, and adore Him as our hero, our Saviour, and
our Lord.

Second, we must be like Jesus. We must grow into
Him  (Eph  4;13).  For  He  showed  us  not  only  what
perfect divinity is but also what we are, what perfect
humanity is, what we must all become.

Like Jesus, we must not only answer the argument
about  evil,  but  we  must  take  up  the  actual  fight
against it. We must be not only His students but His
disciples,  His  friends,  His  followers,  His  children,
His  family,  His  army.  We  must  do  His  work  of
fighting evil by using His weapons of love and truth,
mercy  and  justice,  charity  and  courage,  joy  and
suffering, life and death. For He left us, the Church,
to finish His work.

Third,  we  must  be  like  Jesus  not  just  by  imitating
Him but by becoming incorporated into Him, into His
Body, by getting “plugged into” His very life. That is
what happens when we eat His Body and drink His
Blood in Holy Communion. The very same lifeblood
that flows through Christ then flows through us, as

the very same sap that flows through the tree flows
through  its  branches.  That  is  what  Jesus  Himself
said  to  His  disciples:  “I  am  the  vine,  you  are  the
branches” (Jn 15:5)

FAST & ABSTINENCE

During Lent

Catholics fast, and abstain from meat on Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday.

Fridays of the Year

It is a requirement of our Faith that we abstain

from meat on all the Fridays of the year (except on

Solemnities) in commemoration of our Saviour’s

death.

The fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

The required fast on Ash Wednesday and Good

Friday involves eating only one full meal on those

days. One or two smaller meals may be taken on

those days, but may not total one full meal.  The

required fast does not allow eating anything

between meals.

Abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday &

Fridays of the Year

Abstinence on these days from meat does not

intend the omission of eggs or dairy products.

Age Requirements

"All Catholics who have completed their

fourteenth year are bound by the law of

abstinence; all adults are bound by the law of fast

up to the beginning of their sixtieth year.
